The subjective nature of Linnaean categories and its impact in evolutionary biology and biodiversity studies
Absolute (Linnaean) ranks are essential to rank-based nomenclature (RN), which has been used by the vast majority of systematists for the last 150 years. They are widely recognized as being subjective among taxonomists, but not necessarily in other fields. For this reason, phylogenetic nomenclature (PN) and other alternative nomenclatural systems have been developed. However, reluctance to acce...
متن کاملThe Linnaean Hierarchy and 'Extensional Thinking'
The Linnaean Hierarchy has been opposed from a number of different perspectives, but most of this opposition was based upon the confusion of two aspects of every taxon—extension and intension. These aspects account for its dual nature of simultaneous change and constancy. "Constancy" is apparent only in the differences that exist among groups of organisms; these differences appear in the very f...
متن کاملLinnaean sources and concepts of orchids.
BACKGROUND Linnaeus developed a robust system for naming plants and a useful, if mechanical, system for classifying them. His binomial nomenclature proved the catalyst for the rapid development of our knowledge of orchids, with his work on the family dating back to 1737 in the first edition of his Genera Plantarum. His first work devoted to orchids, indeed the first monograph of the family, was...
متن کاملLectotypification of Linnaean names in Pedicularis (Orobanchaceae)
Ten Linnaean names of Pedicularis (Orobanchaceae) are lectotypified: P. comosa, P. flammea, P. hirsuta, P. incarnata, P. lapponica, P. resupinata, P. rostrata, P. tristis, P. tuberosa and P. verticillata. Lectotypes are designated from the Linnaean herbarium at LINN. The type choices made here maintain the present usage of the corresponding Linnaean names for ten Pedicularis species.
متن کاملThe Linnaean Species of Flower Flies
—Linnaeus described 37 species of flower flies (Diptera: Syrphidae). His collection was studied, and the current status of all his flower fly names is given. Six new synonyms are established (Scaeva annulipes Zetterstedt = Eriozona erratica (Linnaeus), Musca citrofasciata DeGeer = Xanthogramma /estiva (Linnaeus), Xylota curvipes Loew = Chalcosyrphus femoratus (Linnaeus), Chrysogaster chalybeata...
